GLOW Hosting First Shredding Event

Having never held one and having received inquiries from some public officials and residents in the region, GLOW planned to hold a shredding/recycling event for residents and their personal and confidential documents in the spring of 2020. When Covid-19 hit with its resulting shutdowns and other ramifications the decision was made to cancel it. GLOW has revived the idea and is planning to hold events the morning of June 12 at the Town of Pavilion Office/Highway Facility. Pavilion is geographically central to GLOW’s three (3) funding counties-Genesee, Livingston and Wyoming. GLOW’s vendor, Arc of Genesee-Orleans, will be accepting pre-sorted documents such as medical, bank, and tax records at no charge for residents in those counties. There will be a limit of 5 boxes per vehicle. The program will be first come, first served, without appointments. Arc will secure materials brought in, in locked 95 gallon totes on-site and take them to its facility in Batavia for shredding and recycling. Costs are expected to be approximately $2,000-$1,000 for advertising and $1,000 for collection, shredding, and recycling. The program is being funded by GLOW’s MWRR grant and a contribution from local bank Tompkins Bank of Castile. GLOW Planning Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collections

In September GLOW will once again host a household hazardous waste collections for its residents. GLOW started the program in 1996 and has held the program each year since that time, with one year off (1999), when a farm pesticide collection was held. Two (2) collections were held from 1996 until 2003 when Orleans County left GLOW. Since that time single collections have been held each year, using county highway facilities by rotating counties from year to year (though they are always open to residents in all three counties). Materials accepted include typical items like oil-based paint, pesticides, driveway sealer, pool chemicals, tires, vehicle batteries, etc. Over the years electronics and pharmaceuticals were added. Four years ago, when it got to be too much to do both the same day, GLOW stopped accepting electronics and now holds separate electronics collections one or two Saturdays after the household collection. GLOW does both collections by appointment. Approximately 30 people are scheduled for each 15-minute interval for the collections. GLOW stopped accepting pharmaceuticals after the 2019 program because of the number of other drop-off locations for this material. The 2021 household collection will be held on September 18th and the electronics will be held on September 25th. Appointments will start to be accepted the third week of July. For the past 16 years (2021 will be the 17th) GLOW’s primary vendor has been Environmental Enterprises, Inc. of Cincinnati, Ohio for household hazardous waste. The company was chosen using the RFP process, which GLOW reissues every three years. Sunnking, Inc. of Brockport, NY has been the electronics vendor since. 2016. GLOW uses a one year bid process to choose this vendor. Feel free to contact Peggy Grayson, Recycling Administrator at 585/815-7906 or pgrayson@co.genesee.ny.us with questions or for additional information.
